Pooleys Air Day/GYM Fly In at | Compton Abbas Airfield
Sunday 30th June
The annual GYM Fly-In day is being held at Compton Abbas Airfield, Dorset. The Fly-In is a great day out (whether arriving by road or air), with air displays, spot landing competitions and much more!
GYM Visit | 4 FTS, RAF Valley
Wednesday 12th June
Six members of the GYM travelled to Anglesey and the home of Fast Jet training with a superb visit to 4 Flight Training Squadron at RAF Valley. Our hosts showed us around their new state of the art facilities, we were invited to join a briefing on warfare tactics and SAM avoidance and we had a look around their hangar and sat in the new Hawk T2. The T2 is a new variant of the Hawk trainer and allows faster conversion from Hawk to Typhoon.
It was also graduation day for the first 4 graduates on the new T2, so we joined them and the Chief of the Air Staff, Sir Stephen Dalton, for the ceremony and prizegiving. Afterwards, members of the GYM chatted with Sir Stephen about the Guild and his plans after his steps down from his post in 2 months time. It was also the final day at the Squadron for their current boss and after he had been ceremonially drenched with fire extinguishers by the graduates, we left them to enjoy their party. Sadly, the weather was poor all day and there was no flying but the hospitality shown by 4 Sqn was exceptional. We look forward to further trips to Valley and continuing the close ties between the Squadron and the Guild.
Youth in Aviation Event | House of Lords
Thursday 21st May
The GYM recently took part in the third Youth In Aviation (YIA) parliamentary event. Youth In Aviation brings together several organisations that work to further aviation amongst the younger generation, more details can be found at www.airleague.co.uk/2011/03/28/uk-youth-in-aviation-taking-our-message-to-parliament/.
This event was well attended by both Lords and Members of Parliament, giving us a platform to discuss issues that are relevant to our young members such as trying to remove (or reduce to 0%) VAT on training and also pushing for airport expansion which in turn would allow airlines to grow and recruit. It was also a good chance to see the Houses of Parliament, especially for those who had not visited the Palace of Westminster before. After a busy afternoon, we retired to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers where we relaxed with a well earned beer or two.

GYM at Farnborough International Airshow 2012 @Farnborough Airport
Once again, the GYM will be exhibiting at this fantastic, bi-annual event.
Friday 13th July is Futures Day and, despite being unlucky for some, is lucky for you as we are looking for volunteers to come and help us run the aptitude tests. The Guild Aptitude Tests will be available for the students attending to see if they have what it takes to become a pilot. The tests are very simple to run and we are looking for as many of you as possible to help as we expect to be very busy that day. In return for helping, you will get free entry to the airshow, worth £30+ and oppurtunity to see the Flying Display. We also need volunteers to help run the aptitude tests on the Saturday and Sunday. Please contact Jas@gapanym.org and email@example.com, as soon as possible (as we need to register for security purposes), if you can make any or all of these days.
Timings: Friday 0730 (if on the 'set-up' team), ready to open at 0930. Saturday and Sunday 0830 (if on the 'set-up' team). All days until approximately 1730.
