Scholarship Awards Dinner 2009

On Thursday the 12th of November following the Court meeting at Cutler’s Hall saw the presentation of the 2009 Scholarships Winners. GYM members Oli Russell and Jas Singh were present to represent the GYM.
GYM would like to welcome and congratulate all the scholarship winners for their excellent effort, the scholarship winners are as follows:
PPL Scholarship Winners: Emma D’Souza, Ronald Dickie, Hannah Cawthorne, Courtney Challis, Christopher Mann, Andrew Griffiths, Thomas Curtress, and Helme Harrison.
JOC Scholarship Winners: David Batchelder and Kelly Cooke.
It was great to meet this years scholarship winners and during the evening Jas and myself were able to speak to most of them. It was pleasing to see their enthusiasm for aviation and it sounded like they all got a great deal out of their PPL Scholarships, which they completed during the summer.
At the time of writing this David and Kelly winners of the JOC Scholarship 2009 are scheduled to start their course in February 2010 at the EPST training facility in Holland, David expressed how much he was looking forward to getting to grips with the 737 simulator.
During the dinner it was also great to hear how the winners had got on with their courses and what their plans were to progress their careers in Aviation. Their was a variety of interest from RAF Fast Jet, Airline to Private Jet careers, which was good to see within the winners. It was great to introduce one winner to a skipper of the company he had an interview with in the coming weeks based in Hong Kong for their Cadet Pilot Programme.

For those who are interested in 2010 Scholarships they are being advertised on the Guild’s website as I write this, and offer a variety of opportunities at a variety of different levels, follow the links below for an application form.

NEWSFLASH!

GYM joins Facebook

The GYM went 'interactive' in late October when it launched its own page on the 'Facebook' social networking website. The Facebook page enables GYM members to chat to each other online and facilitates the quick and efficient dissemination of information about upcoming events. Most of the GYM communication is already undertaken by e-mail but the Facebook page has enabled a much faster dialogue to take place.

To join the group, search for "Gapan Young Members" under Facebook Groups.

Exhibition - Saturday 1st Nov 2008

Flyer Flight Training Show

The Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators, with some assistance from several GYMs ran another highly successful day of aptitude testing and advice at the bi-annual Flyer Exhibition at Heathrow on the 1st November. Many aspiring pilots of various backgrounds visited the Guild stand, trying their hand (& eye coordination) on the computer-based aptitude tests, learning more about what the Guild can offer and what options might be open to them with regard to a career in flying - and routes to getting there.

If you visited the stand at the Flyer show and would like to know more about how to get involved with the Guild, please don't hestitate to get in touch.

Sir Frederick Tymms Memorial Lecture

A group of GYM members are attended the Sir Frederick Tymms Memorial Lecture about Virgin Galactic presented by Will Whitehorn at the Royal Aeronautical Society, near Hyde Park Corner on 16th October. After the lecture, they made their way to the Rose and Crown for some nourishment and a couple of drinks. Much fun was had by all!

Farnborough International Airshow

Thanks to all those who visited the GYM stand on Friday 18th July 2008 at Farnborough on International Youth Day. The computer aptitude testing was as popular as ever with over 70 people coming and putting their skills to the test. We were delighted to be visited by the Red Arrows team who signed copies of their 2008 display programme for those who were there.

The airshow display was as dramatic as ever with the AVRO Vulcan the star of the show. It was so loud as it throttled up that it set off hundreds of car alarms!

Thank you also to the GYM members who volunteered their time to inspire those they met to take up a future in aviation.

Inaugural Event

GYM Fly-in at Compton Abbas Airfield

Over 160 aircraft attended our first social event held on a glorious spring day at one of the finest airfields in the country. The event was so popular that the airfield had to close for a time and inbound aircraft had to divert to local airfields. The resident Yak display team, the Yakolevs, gave two fine displays as they practised for a hectic summer schedule ahead. Awards were won by a number of GYM members in the competitons held throughout the day - Congratulations to you all!

If you were unable to come to this years event, don't worry, we will be holding the event again next year at Compton Abbas. The date has been set as Sunday 10th May 2009, we hope to see you there.

GYM Needs your help at the RAeS Ballantyne Day

The annual Ballantynes Day will be taking place at the Royal Aeronautical Society on 31 March. This day is sponsored and hosted by Boeing with a focus on careers in Aerospace and is aimed at 15-18 year olds.

As in the past GAPAN will be bringing portable aptitude testing equipment which will be available for the students to explore their aptitude skills for a future career in professional flying.

GYM volunteers are requested to come and help run the Guild stand either during the morning or afternoon, though if you can do the whole day so much the better since not only would we be running the testing, but we would also be there to answer questions from the students. Ideally it would be good to have four of us there for each session, but above that we would be delighted to see anyone who could come in if only for a few hours.

The day is from 0930 to 1600, setting up the stand from 0830 and taking it down at 1630. Lunch will be provided.

Please let us know if you can help by the 14 March, by emailing chairman@gapanym.org.

New "Reports" section added to GYM Website!

You can now read reports by GYM members about GYM activites here.

Doolittle Beer Evening - 3rd Sept 2009

The second memorial beer evening, was a laughter filled event at The Couch pub in central London, saluting James Doolittle, a pioneer of aviation. 'Jimmy' Doolittle's studies in the 1920s revealed that pilots required information external to the cockpit to determine wind speed and direction. He was first pilot to perform an outside loop - something previously thought to be fatal! Along with holding the air speed record and all major flying trophies, he also contributed a great deal to instrument flying having carried out the first instrument landing using systems he himself had developed. All this before distinguished acts of leadership in the US Air Force which made him a household name in the states.
As well as socialising with GYM members, the GYM Committee used the opportunity to discuss GYM business and future events.

GYM Fly In - rescheduled for 12th July 2009

The annual GYM fly-in to the Compton Abbas Pooley's Air Day was unfortunately cancelled in May due to poor weather. Fret not however, as a revised date of 12th July 2009 has been set! Please see the Events Page for more info. Please put the date into your diary now - we would love to see you there!                                                 (01-07-09)
