GYM at Skills London Careers Fair 2010
ExCel London 7-9 October 2010
For the first time ever the Guild had a stand at the London Skills 2010 event dubbed as the "biggest careers event for young people aged 14-19". Over 45,000 visitors most of whom were students from schools and colleges all over London and the Home Counties, descended on the ExCeL centre over three days to discover the exciting range of career opportunities available to them.
The mission of the Guild during those three days was clear and simple: to help and assist any young person aspiring to be a pilot. Our stand consisted of members from all spectrums of the Guild who were able to offer their advice on the many routes for a career into becoming a pilot.
Being a GYM member aspiring to be a pilot myself, I could empathise with a lot of the students who were interested in a career in aviation but had no idea about how to pursue it. I strongly believe that there is a vacuum of information and a lack of guidance out there specifically for young school leavers who want to be pilots. I felt that the presence of the Guild at this skills event was a significant step forward in providing this necessary information and guidance. However I do believe that as a Guild we need to increase our scope by featuring at more events similar to this, and encourage more of our members (especially GYM) so we can together help guide the future aviators of tomorrow.
