25 Apr 09: The Flyer Flight Training Exhibition - GYM Members Needed! Check it out online here. For more details contact chairman@gapanym.org
We pride ourselves on being able to give wide ranging personal and crucially unbiased advice on aviation training and recruitment. Many GYM members have only recently been through the process ourselves and indeed at the last show some had popped up for air from being deep in their training, so our advice is relevant and "of the moment".
The aptitude tests are very straight forward to run - we will show you how the kit works if you haven't done it before.
Several airlines are giving presentations on their recruitment requirements for the following year with other useful seminars for trainees and job-hunters alike. We are flexible on the stand, so if you have a burning desire to attend any presentation or a seminar on something that interests you let us know and we will make sure the stand is covered. The exhibition would normally cost £10 entry on the day - as part of the Guild team you get in for free.
The careers department at the University of Manchester has contacted GYM and asked if we could help out with creating a graduate prospectus entry on becoming an airline pilot. It will appear in Graduate Prospects which is referred to as the UK's official graduate careers support service. Ideally it needs to be about someone who has between 1 and 5 years airline experience. Please read on if you think you might be able to help.
Graduate Prospects produce occupational profiles that are available in University careers services and on the web to inform
students and graduates about job sectors and roles. For more information, please visit the Graduate Prospects website via:

Graduate Prospects are currently writing/updating the profile focusing on airline pilots, and as part of this, they would like a case study of an airline pilot, which would appear on the Graduate Prospects website. The topics to generally be covered in the case study are as follows:
- Why did you choose to become an airline pilot?;
- How did you acquire a pilot role, and how did you acquire your
current role?;
- Do you have any tips for getting in/getting on as an airline pilot?;
- What relevant skills and experience did you gain during your
degree?;
- How relevant (if it was) was your subject of study in securing your
position?;
- How has your role developed?;
- What tasks have you performed/ do you perform in you role?;
- What do you enjoy about your role?;
- How would you like to progress your career?;
- Are there any less favourable parts of the job?;
- Is there any advice that you can give to students/graduates thinking
of becoming an airline pilot?
The case study doesn't have to be too long at all - from 200 to 750 words maximum. The case studies usually use your first name, position and the company that you work for - but if you would rather, a pseudonym can be used. Obviously you would get final approval, and once you have approved it, you would be asked to sign an approval & data protection form.
If you would like to help, it can either be done in two ways - whatever would be the most convenient to you. Either you would be telephoned and interviewed over the phone. From that, the case study would be drafted and sent to you to approve. Or if you would rather, you could draft something up yourself.
Please contact me at chairman@gapanym.org if this is of interest to you.

Opportunities often come up for GYM members to assist at aviation events. If you wish to express your willingness to do so, then please email chairman@gapanym.org, including contact details and location.
